Managing Editor, Slavic Review

The journal Slavic Review, based at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, invites applications for Managing Editor, with a proposed start date of August 1, 2013. Slavic Review is an international interdisciplinary quarterly journal, the official publication of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), a major scholarly professional organization. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full time academic professional appointment.
The Managing Editor works independently, without administrative direction, but in close cooperation with the Academic Editor. The Managing Editor's responsibilities include the following:
* Electronically copyedits complex scholarly articles and book reviews in multiple disciplines (primarily history, literature, anthropology, political science), including handling documentation in languages other than English (primarily Russian and German, but some French and other East European languages)
* Corresponds with authors and reviewers throughout the editorial and production process.
* Prepares manuscripts for all stages of production (including handling visual illustrations)
* Prepares electronic files for use by the compositor, printer, and JSTOR for the electronic edition
* Trains, supervises, and mentors graduate students who serve as editorial assistants
* Oversees the management of the office-including developing and implementing the budget and preparing regular budget reports, working with advertisers, handling permissions for the journal, applying for copyright, overseeing postproduction, and serving as liaison with ASEEES
* Resolves office computer needs and problems
* Maintains and updates the Slavic Review Web site
At least one year experience required in scholarly publishing in the humanities and social sciences, including experience copyediting manuscripts and performing related editorial work with scholarly material in diverse disciplines. MA in a humanities or social science discipline required; ABD/PhD preferred. Reading knowledge of Russian required. Knowledge of German, French, and another East European language desirable. Experience in preparing budgets required.
