The Art of Inclusion: Examining the Curious Relationship Between Art and Design Education and Disability.
Dr. Claire Penketh
Liverpool Hope University
Date: Wednesday 29 May 2013
Time: 2.15pm–3.45pm
Place: Eden 109, Liverpool Hope University, UK
With reference to work published in the International Journal of Art and Design Education (1982-2012), Claire Penketh explores the intersection between compulsory art education in the UK and disability. Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault, Dr Penketh investigates a range of dominant and subjugated discourses. Key figures in the UK have advocated for the recognition of art education as a critical social practice, and work published in IJADE reflects a concern with identity, race, gender, and sexuality. As part of the Changing Social Attitudes series, this CCDS seminar offers a reflection on representations of disability and learning that appear less concerned with critical social practice and more focused on the reinforcement of learner pathology.
Claire Penketh is Pathway Coordinator of Special Educational Needs and Disability Studies in the Faculty of Education, Liverpool Hope University. She is Co-editor of the International Journal of Art and Design Education and author of A Clumsy Encounter: Drawing and Dyspraxia (2011).
