PhD Studentship at Loughborough University, Department of Geography
Applications are invited for a full-time, three-year PhD studentship to
undertake a research project entitled ‘Internationalising UK students
through migrant academic staff’. The studentship is funded through a
prestigious Higher Education Academy (HEA) Doctoral Programme award
<http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/news/detail/2013/DP_announcement_2013>, won
by Michael Hoyler and Dr Heike Jöns, Senior Lecturers in Human
Geography, who will jointly supervise the project. Starting date of the
studentship is 1 October 2013.
The studentship includes tuition fees at UK/EU rate, a student stipend
of £13,861 per annum for three years, and a generous research training
development fund (£850 per year). Please note that international fee
applicants will be required to cover the difference in tuition fee rates.
The project
Migrant academic staff contribute significantly to research and teaching
at UK universities. This project addresses the question how
international academics transfer ideas and perspectives acquired in
non-UK pedagogic environments to students at UK universities. It will
examine the opportunities and challenges migrant academics face in
engaging in such knowledge transfer, its impact on student learning, and
the support structures available. This is an exciting opportunity to
produce new insights into transnational knowledge transfer in higher
education and generate policy-relevant findings on internationalisation
strategies ‘at home’.
Eligibility
Candidates must have a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree
(or equivalent qualification) in Geography or a social science
discipline relevant to the project. It is expected that applicants hold
(or will have completed by October 2013) a Masters degree or equivalent
qualification. Applicants should have experience with interview
techniques and questionnaire surveys. The successful candidate will be
expected to attend an induction process arranged jointly with the HEA
and HEIs, to attend and present at an HEA Annual Doctoral conference or
workshop, and to participate in the community of HEA Doctoral scholars.
