The Asian Performing Arts Forum is pleased to present two free events on
May 24 and May 25 in central London:
APAF presents
*Old Wine in New Bottles: Commerce and the Performing Arts in today’s
China. May 24 2013, 5 – 7 pm.*
Centre for Creative Collaboration, 16 Acton Street (near King’s Cross)
Seminar and Q & A with Joanna Lee
In the past decade, China’s cultural “soft power” has hit the headlines,
from the building boom of “Grand Theatres” around the country to
large-scale China festivals from Kennedy Center to the Concertgebouw. At
the same time, international arts organizations touring China have begun
to extend well beyond Shanghai and Beijing to second and third-tier
cities, with Broadway-style shows particularly in demand. Arts
consultant Joanna Lee shares her experience with extensive planning,
labour and cross-cultural negotiations that go on behind the scenes.
Since forming her consultancy Museworks Ltd. in 2003, Joanna
Lee’s clients have included Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, the Berlin
Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, San
Francisco Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
YouTube Symphony Orchestra, Signature Theatre and Beijing Music
Festival. She was a cultural advisor to David Henry Hwang’s bilingual
Broadway comedy /Chinglish/, and assisted in the China fieldwork and
research for the book /Site and Sound: The Architecture and Acoustics of
New Opera Houses and Concert Halls/ by Victoria Newhouse (2012).
Admission is free
True Heart Theatre in collaboration with APAF present
*Telling Tales, May 25 2013, 4.30 – 6.30 pm*
Chinese Community Centre, 2 Leicester Court, London WC2H 7DW (off
Cranbourn Street, Leicester Square)
A conversation with *David Henry Hwang*
Also featuring a 30-minute showcase of a devised performance
in Cantonese & English based on *Agnes** **Allcock’s/ /**/Behind the
Curtain/**/ /*(with English surtitles)
Eminent American playwright David Henry Hwang, best known for the West
End success of /M Butterfly/ in the late 80s, has written many
award-winning plays for Broadway since then – most recently /Chinglish/,
and /Yellowface/. With Arts Council England support, True Heart is
producing the most autobiographical of his plays */Golden Child/* at the
New Diorama Theatre 2 – 12 October for its London premiere. True Heart
will chat to David Henry Hwang about his illustrious and inspiring
career in playwriting and then open up the floor for a Q & A with the
artist.
*/Behind the Curtain/*/ /was inspired by the infamous MacLennan Affair
in colonial Hong Kong during the 1980s. A young police officer is found
dead, with five bullets to his chest and a suicide note: things do not
add up. This is a play-in-development about the power of public opinion,
the accountability of government, and the battle for one's human right
to love freely. Directed & performed by Larry Ng, with Valentina Wong &
Andy Yau
