The obvious first port of call is the School of Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University. See http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/literatures-languages-cultures/celtic-scottish-studies/archives
This sounds like a potentially very interesting find - good luck!

Dear all,
I recently discovered a manuscript songbook in our archive, dated 1709, which had no context or accession records connected to it. It contains various Scottish folk songs, ballads, reels and jigs.
Does anybody know of a good contact who can help with trying to decipher the book? It seems quite unique as the majority of Scottish folk songs were first published in the 1740's-50s but I am no expert on the subject. Any help on who to contact would be great!
