Contributions are sought for an edited volume, Masculinity in Crisis: Depictions of modern male trauma in Ireland – edited by Catherine Rees, Loughborough University, published by Carysfort Press (in conjunction with the Arts Council of Ireland).
This edited volume will include chapters from a variety of academic disciplines discussing the so-called ‘crisis in masculinity’ as expressed in contemporary Irish culture, arts and society. The book aims to build upon the existing body of literature which discusses masculinity suffering from a series of economic, sexual and personal setbacks, but this collection focuses on representations of masculinity within a specific Irish cultural, social, political, theatrical, dramatic and literary context, offering insights into the depiction of men and opening up the debate about the pervasiveness and relevance of crisis discussions. The volume aims to enable dialogues to be opened and exchanged between scholars studying gender in different social contexts, and those currently engaged in Irish Studies more widely, and seeks to foster links and common ground in these examinations. Thus, this collection is interdisciplinary and hopes to cultivate communication around different expressions of gender and sexuality within contemporary Ireland. The main focus of the volume will be depictions and studies of men and masculinity within the arts (principally theatre, literature and film) but I am also interested in receiving proposals which draw upon other disciplinary approaches, particularly human geography, cultural studies, history and politics.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
Depiction of masculinity in Irish theatre and literature
Filmic representations of masculinity
Discussion of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ (and later financial crisis)
Reflections on masculinity from postcolonial perspectives
Cultural and social impact of masculinity in crisis
Geographical accounts of masculinities
