Avoid 32bit - you won't be able to do any meaningful research on a 32 bit machine - try our VM as it is 64 bit. One caveat is that your computer MUST be able to support VTx (you may need to switch this on in your BIOS) for 64 bit VMs to be run in VirtualBox/VMware. We've seen quite a few laptops recently that despite having modern CPUs have no BIOS option for enabling VTx.
We'd strongly recommend a dual boot setup where you are doing anything more than learning about FSL.
