Subject: Re: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] Research participants needed for online questionnaire!
Hi Craig,
Indeed, prevention is a key factor, but focusing on fire fighting mental health is not really the premise of the research. This is the first part of a much larger piece of work which looks at both preventative and reactive support for children, young people and families using a wide variety of alternatives with a focus on technology. A lot of the work discussed in the research isn't necessarily about mental health either or necessarily supporting the needs of children directly. For example, there is a great power in providing containment for adults with high quality information about specific needs or someone who can answer a quick question about a child's progress reports in school for example. Many of the techniques can also be used to provide prevention opportunities or targeting learning need or training for teachers, etc. These approaches in themselves could be considered 'preventative', but we don't know yet.
I think Jacqui makes a good point, any support is always a co-construction between professional and 'client' as well as the need to acknowledge and work with multiple views and unequal power distribution. Using new technology to provide support or offer preventative resources isn't going to be suitable for everyone, in every situation. There is a need to better understand who, when, where, why and how.
So, I would completely agree that prevention is key and wherever possible any work would focus on this. But, I think there are far too many variables (unfortunately) that do not always make this ideal possible or perhaps appropriate given the time, context and individual need.
Thank you for taking the time to provide a comment on the work though, this is really appreciated and I hope you'll find the time to complete the questionnaire your views would be warmly welcomed.
All the best
Nick
