I'm initially looking at Portfolio and ResourceSpace for our Dam system investigation, they both can access our CMS database.

We use Third Light (http://www.thirdlight.com/) - it's easy to use and pretty affordable compared to a number of other DAMs.

Subject: Query about Data Asset Management Systems for images.

Dear All,

I have query about Data Asset Management Systems for images.

I work for a commercial archaeological company (50->100 employees) and I am charged, along with our IT specialist Graham Sherwood, to look for a system that will open up our digital photo server to our office based staff of about 35 employees. At the moment we just store photos on a backed up server, in folders, according to which archaeological project or site that they belong to. It’s a linear system that is difficult to search unless you already know where to find what you’re looking for. What we would like is an accessible library of images that can be searched in a much more flexible way using other search terms and criteria, via metadata, keywords and even visually by picture.

We’re aware that this could be expensive and time consuming but I think it important in the long term for the accessibility and management of our images. What I’d like to do in the first instance is to demonstrate the usefulness of a DAMS to our directorship here. We need an affordable system, bearing in mind that commercial archaeology doesn’t reap large profits. Graham has been experimenting with some open sourced DAMS but I wonder if anyone would be willing and able to give us some guidance with this.

With thanks,

Strephon Duckering
