Dear Thelma
Just a couple of points:
1. How do you know if the condition is relevant/going to have any effect on their work if you do not contact them?
2. We regularly contact applicants, usually just to clarify certain details, and often it means that they do not need to be seen by a OH physician. We even accept verbal consent to put recommendations under the equality act on our Fit report. this saves a lot of delay and possible worry.
The important thing is to keep a record of the consultation the same as if you saw them face to face.
Regards Anne

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Paper screening questionaire
Can anyone clarify if it is legal under the Equality Act to ring job applicants to ask questions about declared medical condition in health questionaire.
I have been task to paper screen but felt it is sometimes necessary to the applicant by phone to further probe about medical conditions that may affected their fitness for work. i hear someone say we should not be asking about medical history unless relevant to the pos applied for?
At the Trust i work employees are still given standard questionaire to answer with the view of supporting them under the EA or if unfit then refer to OH physician for second opinion.
Regard Thelma
