The Institute for the Performing Arts Development (University of East London)
and The Centre for Contemporary Theatre at Birkbeck (University of London)
are hosting a half-day research event to explore the implications of
spectatorship, authorship, and patronage in relation to participatory arts.
This event will examine some of the projects featured in the 2012 Cultural
Olympiad in contrast to One and Other, the so-called 'fourth plinth' event in
Trafalgar Square.
Combining artists, producers, curators, policy makers and academics, this
event will invite discussion and debate on the role that participation might
play in artworks in London now. We will investigate what might be the
significance of the public's participation in these works. Who takes part,
why, how does participation connect with the different agendas that drive
participatory arts projects such as the artist's, the commissioning body's,
and the participant's own interests and motivations? What might be the
implications of participatory arts and performance models for notions of
patronage? What is the future of participation?
