New variants on the 'undeserving poor': current perceptions and experiences of disability and illness
Under the current UK coalition government, 'austerity measures' have been particularly punitive for disabled people, both financially as disability welfare is substantially cut, but also socially as media representation of 'scroungers' and 'skivers' is increasingly synonymous with disability. At the same time, there has been a rise in hate crime against disabled people.
This one day seminar, organised by the BSA's West Midlands Medical Sociology Group and Disability Study Group, aims to bring together academics, activists, PhD students and interested others to discuss the impact of this austerity regime on disabled people and their families.
We invite abstracts (300 words) which may cover a range of topics. For example: health and well being; disability representation; social media and disability activism; gender and disability; discrimination and hate crime; chronic illness and disability; being disabled in the 21st century; disability and inequality
Abstract submission deadline: 18 April 2013
