They did keep trying to suspend it on the basis that I was unavailable for work as I was doing something else, even in 1982 they didn't like you doing anything apart from sitting at home waiting to be employed. Eventually I got on a community programme at a neighbouring museum, one of those job creation/hide the unemployed schemes where I got paid slightly more than benefit levels to set up their biological records system. We could do with something like that rather than enforced shelf filling these days, they were actually vaguely useful, the Director of Tyne and Wear Museums got his start on one of those too.

I'm guessing there wasn't a government trying to send you to Poundland unpaid or some other such thing if you were able to sustain unemployment benefit for a year in order to complete your voluntary assignment. Times have changed I'm guessing, I'm wondering whether one would receive unemployment benefits for so long whilst volunteering in today's desperate climate? We have nearly 1 million young people out of work and desperate to earn a living at a time where there is a dire shortage of jobs. An entire generation is missing out on the chance to gain a respectable start to professional life using their skills, and sinking into the pits of mental health difficulties due to the lack of opportunity to accrue feelings of self-worth, appreciation, validation of their identity, financial self-sufficience, and all the other negative impacts that affected all unemployed people of any age. The appaulling behaviour of ruthless and rude recruiters just adds insult to injury in young people's situations.

Since you mentioned it on an open list, can I ask how you supported yourself financially in that position for that length of time?
