The Stuart Hall Library Research Network was established in January 2013 as a monthly meeting place for postgraduate researchers (artists, critics, curators) to present their work that resonates with Iniva’s vision for visual arts and international perspectives.
To celebrate the success of the Research Network so far, the library will host a symposium on 20/27 June (date to be confirmed), 12-6pm.
We are inviting proposals for presentations that address the theme ‘The Trouble with Research.’ Trouble with research proposes an active (and positive) process for researching and creating things. We may also be drawn to the term as artists in the problematic space of creativity as research in academia which requires us to bring into question methods, techniques and decision making matters integral to making art. Fundamentally though we can use the phrase to recognise research and creativity as a practice and process of questioning, problematising, critiquing. It is a way to recognise and wrangle with the inherent anomalies and disjunctures associated with interdisciplinary research and practice. This is an opportunity to engage with any of the following:
- The relationship between contemporary visual art and cultural politics
- Stuart Hall’s work on culture and representation
- Artistic and/or curatorial practice
- Filmmaking and media analysis
- Literary Studies including criticism and theory
We are looking for exciting and engaging ways of presenting your research, which might include individual presentations, presentations in pairs, in conversation or dialogue. If you are interested in presenting at the symposium, please email a 250 word summary, a short biography (no more than 200 words) and equipment requirements by Friday 17 May to Sonia Hope, Library Manager and Researcher, and Roshini Kempadoo (Media Artist, Photographer, Reader in Media Practice, UEL and Stuart Hall Library Animateur) at [log in to unmask]
