Some of the many intersections of crime with the biological and biomedical sciences are explored in the new issue of STUDIES IN HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF BIOLOGICAL AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES, and also in the journal's first open-peer-review essay, available now at the journal website.
The March 2013 issue carries a set of ten papers on Forensic Cultures, edited and introduced by Ian Burney, David Kirby and Neil Pemberton. Contributors include Christopher Hamlin on "technologies of witness" in historical perspective, Alison Winter on the career of forensic hypnosis, Michael Lynch on the legal status of DNA evidence, and Deborah Jermyn on "forensic realism" in TV crime dramas.
At the end of the issue are two essay reviews, including one by Oren Harman on E. O. Wilson's controversially group-selectionist The Social Conquest of Earth (2012). A new draft essay by Harman, reflecting on the growing presence of neuroscience in criminal court cases, and entitled "Unformed Minds: Juveniles, Neuroscience and the Law", is freely available now on the journal website:

Comments on the essay are most welcome, and should be sent to me, sometime in the next two weeks, at the email address below. A version revised in the light of comments received will be published in the June 2013 issue.
STUDIES IN HPS C would be very glad to hear from anyone wishing to contribute an HPBio-ish open-peer-review essay along these lines in the future. Again, expressions of interest should be sent to me at the email address below.
