We are pleased to highlight two events hosted by the British Sociological
Association Medical Sociology (Wales). These will be informal seminars and

Practices of care, regulation and professional practice: what are the
implications of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry?

Swansea University
To discuss the main recommendations from the report and what the existing
sociological literature (particularly from the journal Sociology of Health
and Illness) tells us about care practices and regulation/governance.

Use of sedatives in end-of-life care: legislation and practice
Professor Clive Seale, Brunel University and Dr Idris Baker, Consultant in
Palliative Medicine, at Ty Olwen Hospice, Swansea
Professor Clive Seale will report on a comparative study on the use of
sedation in end-of-life care in UK, Belgium and Netherlands. The
presentation will focus on the reasoning and the practices of care
providers, and how these relate to the existing legislation on assisted
dying. Dr Idris Baker will offer a clinical perspective, presenting some
ethical considerations and the evolving position on the use of sedation
within the palliative medicine world.
