medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
May I say hats off (or birettas?) to Herbert Thurston(1856-1939), that indefatigable Jesuit church scholar of the turn of the century? The brief history of the "Hail Mary" I summarized last week comes mostly from the book Gordon mentions below. According to Wikipedia (sorry, I don't have access right now to the DNB, which seems to be where Wiki got its info), Thurston "wrote more than 150 articles for the Catholic Encyclopedia (1907-1914), and published nearly 800 articles[!] in magazines and scholarly journals, as well a dozen books. He also re-edited Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints (1926-1938)." It seems to me that every time I went looking for some basic summary of a point about medieval liturgy or ecclesiastical practice in grad school, Thurston was either a go-to source or showed up in the bibliography. He seems to have absorbed every volume of the PL and PG in his citations. What a prolific scholar.
Best,
John

Herbert Thurston also wrote a paper "The Origins of the Hail Mary" reprinted in his book: "Familiar Prayers:Their Origin and History", Burns Oates, 1953, pp.90-114.

Francis of Assisi's Salutatio beatae Virginis which Gordon mentions is here in Latin < http://www.franciscanos.org/esfa/salbmv.html > and here in some English translations < http://www.paxetbonum.net/SalBVM_E.html >. As he has said, it's quite different to the Ave Maria , which is the prayer in question in the Grosseteste text.
Old but still good is the article "Hail Mary" by the remarkable Herbert Thurston in the old Catholic Encyclopedia (1910) < http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07110b.htm >. -- Paul

The Salutation of the Blessed Virgin Mary ascribed to St Francis is very different to the so-called Peace Prayer of St Francis which is first found in France in the early 20th-century. The prayer Grosseteste refers to is actually the "Hail Mary"

Tuija;
Does Grosseteste actually mention a prayer by Franciscus?
The Peace Prayer of St. Francis was apparently non-existent before the 20th century, and it first appeared in French.
