***Apologies for cross posting***
We thought you might like to know about the new resources that have recently been added to our website (many available to all, with some open to HE/FE only).
Roundabout was the monthly Technicolor cinemagazine for South and Southeast Asia. Launched in May 1962 by the British government’s Central Office of Information (COI), it promoted British values, manufacturing and the ethos of the Commonwealth. Described by civil servants from the time as ‘soft propaganda’, its light ‘magazine’ style treatment of ‘topical’ stories conveyed detailed factual content in an entertaining way.
The BUFVC now has 126 issues of Roundabout, containing 605 moving image videos available to view on its website. The videos, dating from 1962 to 1974, are all in sound and vibrant Technicolor – a huge attraction for cinema audiences at the time.
This new resource provides an exciting snapshot of how the government wanted South and Southeast Asia to view Britain, while providing an intriguing insight into the way we viewed ourselves.
Access Roundabout on the BUFVC website here - http://bufvc.ac.uk/newsonscreen (open to all)
Plus we’ve added new features and more content to the News on Screen database. You can now:
- Listen to five interviews with newsreel staff. The BECTU History Project interviews provide a unique insight into some of the intangibles of newsreel history and production, including: day-to-day working culture; issues of self-censorship; political bias; and faking footage. The player includes a synchronised transcript.
- Search across 80,000 newsreel production documents using our innovative PDF viewer. The production documents provide unrivalled access to information behind the story including: where an event took place; all the people involved; who shot it; and where the footage came from.
- Browse over 100 souvenir programmes, brochures and leaflets via out new Souvenir Programme Map – providing a fascinating snapshot of how Britain marked the events that made the news in the 1940s and 1950s.
Access all the new features on the BUFVC website now - http://bufvc.ac.uk/newsonscreen (available to HE & FE, with production documents open to all)
Enjoy using our new resources, and keep a look-out for more new resources being launched soon,
