Hi David,
Giasemi Vavoula's phd thesis may be useful for you. Amongst several methods, she used "diary study" technique as a qualitative method of research:

She wrote the thesis 12 years ago, so, uint eh main time, she has wrote other interesting papers and books. I link them, just in case: http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=-Sy9ogkAAAAJ&hl=en
I hope it helps
Best,

Subject: Diary studies
Dear all,
Has anyone on the list been involved in running a diary study as a research method to engage with users (as part of a design process)? As part of a project I'm working on we're planning to use this as method into researching user behaviours and motivations around mobile usage (specifically around arts/cultural heritage but also considered in a wider context).
I'm up to my eyes in literature and outlines of the process (plus the findings of similar studies) but I've never actually run one before, so I'm just wondering if anyone's been involved in this kind of research and would be willing to share some of their experiences? In particular I'd be interested in issues around recruitment, how you managed to keep participants interested and motivated throughout the study and how you structured it (i.e. what kind of feedback you were looking for—totally unstructured or a more survey-based structure) etc.
With best wishes,
David
