Dear MCGers,
there seem to be a number of conversations about 'what's the point of
museum websites?' and 'what do you want from a museum website?' at the
moment and I thought it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts. (And that
does mean *you* - there are over 1000 of you on this list, it'd be lovely
to hear some new voices chipping in too :)
The Museums Association blog has a post 'What's the point of museum
websites?'
http://www.museumsassociation.org/museums-journal-blog/16042013-whats-the-point-of-museum-websites
where Rebecca
Atkinson says, 'I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why museums have
websites. It’s often said that if you’re not on the web then you’re
invisible, but that doesn’t seem to answer the question of what a museum’s
website is actually for.' So, what's the point of a museum website?
Rebecca later says, 'Museums Journal will start to carry reviews of
websites and smartphone apps, and I’d be interested to know what you think
makes a good website or app – beyond the obvious need for functionality,
accessibility and (hopefully) some aesthetic considerations', which is also
the subject of a #TateDebate, with @Tate asking: 'What do you want from a
museum website?'
http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/blogs/tate-debate-what-do-you-want-museum-website
So what do our audiences want from museum websites? When you're visiting a
museum, what do you want from their website?
And for a bit of historical context from a vaguely museum technologist POV,
here's Koven Smith asking 'What's the Point of a Museum Website?' in 2011
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/13933930/highlight/166041, my notes from the
'What's the point of a museum website' panel discussion at MCN2011

some thoughts 'Brochureware, aggregators and the messy middle: what's
the point of a museum website?' before the panel
