I'm a bit late to the discussion, but some people like Tiki-Toki (
http://www.tiki-toki.com/) or Neatline's timelines + maps combination (
http://neatline.org/).
A lot depends on the final audience and on whether you've got an existing
set of content you'd like to re-use rather than re-creating within new
software. For example, Viewshare now works with content published as JSON
but that's only useful if you can easily publish data from spreadsheets or
collections systems in that format.
And to touch on Florian's question, I quite like timelines that give you a
sense of the density of information at different periods (like the Wellcome
one, and to an extent, Simile and variants) and cope with 'lumpy' datasets
as well as neatly thematic information - it's a lot easier to make things
look nice when events are evenly spaced out across the length of the
timeline.
Cheers, Mia
