Hi All
I am the new Computer Officer for the Sedgwick Museum, here in
Cambridge, and I am interested to know how other museums with large
databases back up their data, and the policies in place to ensure that
the collections database is safe and secure.
Our Collections Managements System is Mobydoc's SNBASE , which we use
because it is specifically designed for natural history collections.
We have about 250,000 records on the database which we expect to grow in
the future to nearer 1 million records. Our estimated disk space
required for this is 2 TB.
My questions are:
1.) If you have an electronic catalogue or collections management
system, how big is it in terms of data and how is it backed up?
2.) Do you carry out electronic accessioning and if so how do you
produce auditable back ups of accession data?
I will be visiting Bath and Cardiff this week to meet others who use the
SNBASE database and OPAC systems to see their set up, but I'm interested
in getting a rounded idea of how people backup their data so I can offer
a reasoned suggestion to my department on the best way to upgrade our
systems for the future.
Best wishes
Lisa
