Hi Nick,
I'm giving a presentation on this topic at next month's national Museums Australia conference in Canberra: "Create Once, Publish Everywhere - Approaches for re-using collection information online".
There are many challenges, especially with the large volumes of tombstone data created before staff were planning to provide public access to content. However, it is important to look at collections data and consider how it could be re-used in different ways, for different audiences with different levels of interest. This can help guide how the content is created.
I'll post you a link to the presentation after the conference.
Matthew Oliver from NZ's Ministry of Culture and Heritage recently wrote about work they have done to re-use content: https://webtoolkit.govt.nz/blog/2013/03/multi-channel-publishing/
Cheers,
Paul
