COLONIALISM AND NATIONAL IDENTITY, “L’OLTREMARE” BETWEEN FASCISM AND REPUBLIC
SEMINAR 1: THE STATE OF THE ART
EXTENDED DEADLINE: 15 MAY 2013
The research group promoter of the Sissco workshop on ‘COLONIALISM AND NATIONAL IDENTITY, “L’OLTREMARE” BETWEEN FASCISM AND REPUBLIC’ invites proposals for papers for the first of three meetings that will take place in Cagliari, at the Dipartimento di Scienze Sociali e delle Istituzioni: 26-27 September 2013.
The seminar intends to consider the status of the research on Italian colonialism, here not understood as an addendum to the national history, but as a constitutive element of national identity.
In accordance with recent historiography, we are interested in promoting reflection on the role of colonialism here comprehended as a political and cultural process that acts within national borders, and the effects of which are beyond the chronological limits posed by mere occupation of African territories.
The aim of the seminar is to investigate two periods: Fascist period and the Republican years. Thus, we seek to develop two objectives: on the one hand, bring the historical narrative on Italian colonialism within a wider and articulated national historiography; on the other, we are interested in shifting the historical boundaries of the current historiography on colonialism in order to examine its cultural legacy on Italian society after 1945.
Contributors will therefore examine one of these areas:
➢ The colonial culture during the Fascist period: formation, themes, and diffusion.
➢ Colonialist culture during the Republican years: institutions, political parties, associations, historiography, and literature in front of the colonial question.
Particularly appreciated will be those papers that exploit the interdisciplinary and/or comparative approach on the topic, alongside original elements of the colonialist culture transmitted to the fascist culture, together with the fractures and the continuity in the Republican period.
To be considered for the workshop, please submit a 250-words abstract of your proposed paper, in English or Italian, as well as you short CV by May 15th 2013 to [log in to unmask]
Successful applicants will be notified by May 30th 2013.
Scientific Committee: Paolo Bertella Farnetti (coordinator), Paolo Borruso, Charles Burdett, Valeria Deplano, Marzia Maccaferri, Luciano Marrocu, Cecilia Novelli, Alessandro Pes (coordinator), Gabriele Proglio, Alessandro Triulzi.
