Italy, Leeds, and Global Society.
A talk with Italian Noir Writer Massimo Carlotto
Leeds Central Library, Wednesday, 17th April 2013, 5.30-7pm
Talk in Italian with an English interpreter.
Free entrance - All welcome
Leading Italian noir writer Massimo Carlotto comes back to Leeds to discuss his understanding of the globalised society we live in, in a public interview with Dr Gigliola Sulis (Italian at the University of Leeds). Carlotto visited the University of Leeds for the first time in 2008, and was so impressed by its lively international environment that he set in campus parts of his latest novel, Respiro corto (Einaudi, 2012). Having described the criminal side of Italian society in his earlier work, in this novel Massimo Carlotto goes to the heart of the crime of our time: global and borderless.
In the occasion of this second visit to Leeds, Carlotto will also launch At the End of a Dull Day (Europa Editions, 2013), English translation of his novel Alla fine di un giorno noioso (e/o, 2011).
The writer will also read selected passages of the Italian originals. English translations will be provided to the public on the day, and made available in advance on the LivItaly website, (www.leeds.ac.uk/arts/livitaly). Books in English will be available to buy.
‘I brought together a group of rebellious youths, who join forces in a Leeds’ pub, calling themselves the Dromos Gang. I followed the progress of their enterprises from one end of the globe to another. “It was an honour to have you here, boys,” were the words of farewell from the university’s Head of Economics. And boys they were indeed. Unscrupulous, cynical criminals, but boys nonetheless. In contrast to how we imagine criminal or mafia organisations, these boys have no ties to any one place. They live, play and dream just like others their age.’
Massimo Carlotto on Respiro corto
The writer
Massimo Carlotto was born in Padua, Italy, in 1956. One of Italy’s best-loved writers and a major exponent of the Mediterranean Noir novel, he has been compared with many of the most important American hard-boiled crime writers. Among his novels, the following are available in English translation: The Colombian Mule, The Master of Knots (Orion Editions); The Fugitive, Death’s Dark Abyss, Poisonville, Bandit Love, and At the End of a Dull Day (Europa Editions). Il fuggiasco, Arrivederci amore, ciao, and Jimmy della collina have also been made into highly acclaimed films.

The novels
Respiro corto
A powerful story, which stretches from the radioactive woods of Chernobyl to the vaults of Swiss banks, in the company of an irresistible gang of privileged kids. Zosim, Sunil, Giuseppe and Inez are the Dromos Gang. Intelligent, impeccably dressed and totally unscrupulous, yet brotherly to one another. They met whilst reading Economics at Leeds.
At the End of a Dull Day
A wonderfully sleazy story of crime and corruption, set in the Italian North-Eastern region. Giorgio Pellegrini, the hero of The Goodbye Kiss, has been living an ‘honest’ life for eleven years. But that’s about to change. Carlotto proves just how good he is at creating a central character who is morally dubious and unsympathetic, but compelling all the same. English translation by Antony Sughaar.
