Dear All,
I've posted details below of an AHRC-funded PhD opportunity to work with
Helen Nicholson the Drama Department here at Royal Holloway - I'll also have
direct involvement as an advisor to both the PhD and the wider project.
Could you bring this to the attention of anyone that you think might be
interested. I'm happy to field queries, but it's best if those interested
contact Helen directly. There's no formal closing date, but the project team
are obviously keen to secure a good candidate as soon as possible.
This is an AHRC funded PhD so the usual rules about eligibility for the
funds apply.
All the best
David

AHRC Funded Doctoral Studentship
Amateur Dramatics: Crafting Communities in Time and Space
We are seeking a PhD student to join a strong team of researchers for this
innovative new research project, funded by the AHRC. It is led by Helen
Nicholson (RHUL, Principle Investigator), Nadine Holdsworth (Warwick,
Co-Investigator) and Jane Milling (Exeter, Co-Investigator).
Amateur theatre has long had active place in the social and cultural life of
many communities, contributing to the feeling of place. But academics have
been conspicuously silent on the subject, favoring forms of theatre that are
more palatable to radical politics or more in tune with metropolitan taste.
Moreover, professional actors often deride amateurs for their production
values. Yet for the participants in amateur dramatics themselves, the choice
of repertoire, the craft of performance and the production values are deeply
important.
The Studentship Case Study: Amateur Dramatics in Urban Utopias
This PhD studentship will address the case study Amateur Dramatics in Urban
Utopias located at RHUL. This study will research amateur dramatics in urban
communities that were conceived in the 20th century as utopian spaces,
including garden cities and suburban Metroland. The partner for this PhD
project is Letchworth Garden Cities Heritage Foundation, promising unique
insights into how amateur theatre contributed to creativity in urban and
suburban spaces. The precise scope of the PhD, however, will depend on the
candidate¹s interests within this broad frame.
Applications are welcome from MA graduates from different disciplinary
areas, including theatre and performance studies, cultural/historical
geography, cultural studies and urban history. The successful candidate will
benefit from:
· The energetic research cultures and training at RHUL in drama and/ or
cultural geography
· The opportunity to attend national symposia and international
academic conferences
· The chance to engage with cultural policy-makers and voluntary groups
· Becoming integral to a team of researchers in a cutting-edge project.
The research will be supervised by Professor Helen Nicholson (Drama and
Theatre) and advised by Professor David Gilbert (Cultural Geography).
