I am looking for information about the history of the BBC sound effects
library collection or documents explaining how it was developed and used by
radio producers in creating their programs overseas or in the UK. I think
these recordings were first assembled for broadcasting purposes during
World War II, given the vast array of sounds for every conceivable weapon
and conveyance--aircrafts, tanks, etc.
While I have seen that there are some excellent recent publications about
the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, I haven't been able to find any documentation
about the history of the sound effects library. I have listened to a wide
array of this material. The sound effects library is still commercially
available for sale, and I have found several early versions and editions of
these collection at the national radio archives in Kuala Lumpur and Accra.
I've already contacted the BBC Written Archive and await their reply, but
any suggestions on where and how to research the history of this very
significant archive would be of great help.
Thanks again,
Peter Bloom
