Fabian, well put. Agreed.
a little while ago there was an op-ed in the main swedish weekend
newspaper, which was a thinly veiled - actually purposefully see-through -
analogy to immigration and racism. Foreign slugs were taking over a
swedish garden and while swedes abhor violence nevertheless it felt good
to stamp out these slugs because they were destroying the foliage. No
outcry. Except for a few people, who then got the full brunt of resurgent
white privilege thrown at them. One of them ended up with clinical
exhaustion from the onslaught ("how DARE you! and who are YOU (African
heritage academic with swedish passport) to say anything about sweden
etc". Casual racism is the thing these days. Actually, I don't think its
even cultural racism anymore. It's "well, I tried, but oh well, what can
you seriously expect me to do with all these darkies around?" Sickness.
