Subject: East Sussex Record Office: closure for move to The Keep

Dear list members

East Sussex Record Office is moving to The Keep this summer. The current search room at The Maltings will close for good on 31 May and will reopen in The Keep later this year.

While we are closed staff and volunteers will be able to focus on preparing millions of historical documents from our three sites for transfer to The Keep and supervising the move itself, which will take about four months to complete. We will also be building and testing our new website, online catalogue and document ordering system ready for reopening.

We will continue to answer as many postal and email enquiries as we can and to provide our paid research and copying services during the closure period subject to staff and document availability.

The Keep is a new state-of-the art centre at Moulsecoomb which will bring together the archives and other historical resources of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove and the Special Collections of the University of Sussex under one roof for the first time and will also include the library and headquarters of the Sussex Family History Group.

We will be sad to leave The Maltings but we look forward to welcoming users to the excellent new facilities at The Keep towards the end of the year.

Please keep an eye on our website for the latest news and sign up to our 'Keep in Touch Campaign' : email [log in to unmask]

Subject: Freelance Archivist / Research Position for the Laverstoke Mill Project

Freelance Archivist / Research Position for the Laverstoke Mill Project

JOB TITLE: Freelance Archivist or similar heritage professional for the Bombay Sapphire Distillery at Laverstoke Mill.
DURATION OF CONTRACT: 6 months, starting as soon as possible.
TYPE OF CONTRACT: Full-time ideally, part-time will be considered.
LOCATION OF PROJECT:
The position will be based at Laverstoke Mill, address:
The Bombay Spirits Company Ltd, Laverstoke Mill, London Road, Hampshire, RG28 7NR. The site is between the villages of Overton and Whitchurch, near both the 303 and the M3, and in easy reach of Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover, as well as only 45 minutes from Heathrow.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Bombay Sapphire Distillery at Laverstoke Mill will be the new and sole distillery for Bombay Sapphire, located in rural Northern Hampshire, on the river test. Currently work is underway to convert the 1000 year old mill into a state of the art, highly sustainable gin distillery. Previously the site was home to the Portal family who made high quality paper for the bank notes of England, and commonwealth countries under exclusive contract. The site has had 5 royal visits and contains 3 grade two listed English Heritage buildings.

When open in late 2013 the Visitor Centre aims to attract over 100K visitors annually, who will be able to see Bombay Sapphire being made, as well as the botanicals used in the process in a striking glass house, designed by Thomas Heatherwick (of Olympic Cauldron fame). There will also be a bar, shop and cafe where guests can relax and drink a cocktail next to the beautiful river test. We will have both a heritage centre open to the public (free of charge), and also further exhibition talking about our production process, history as a brand and the history of the site (paid).

HERITAGE PROJECT OVERVIEW
As part of the above project, we are looking for one freelance archivist or similar heritage professional to research the history of the Laverstoke paper mill in order to develop the heritage elements of this project alongside existing agencies. This covers the gathering of information relating to the history of the site, the development of exhibitions in the visitor centre and assisting with the publicity of the site from a heritage perspective.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The archives for the Mill are not owned by the Bombay Sapphire Company, so the work would therefore largely include:

•	Researching the history of the Mill, for example: locating and recording other archive sources for the Mill; speaking to local people to gather oral history and locate archives and artefacts in the local community with the possibility of purchasing or borrowing items for exhibition; gathering all information together so that we have a permanent record of the available historical information; obtaining surrogate copies of photographs and other materials as appropriate.
•	Assisting with the communication of the history of the mill, for example to the press in the lead up to the opening of the site, for the training of new staff and for the visiting public. This will include the creation of a detailed summary of the history of the mill and various specific aspects of the mill’s history, taking into account special features such as the ice house and the old mill wheel. It will also involve working closely with the marketing team and may involve presenting the history to special groups.
•	Taking part in related historical events which may be held at the site or in the local area during the period of the contract.
•	Working with relevant agencies to develop an historical exhibition about the history of Laverstoke Mill, including the placement of physical objects and the development of historical content for audio and video presentations.
•	Answering any enquiries relating to the history of the mill which are received during the period of the contract.
•	Working with a writer to develop an official history of the site and buildings.
•	The development of an archive storage area for items relating to the mill and the Bombay Sapphire brand.

REPORTING STRUCTURE
The position will report to both the Visitor Centre General Manager with regard to the project specifics and the Global Archive Manager for Bacardi Global Brands regarding heritage practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The position would best suit an individual with extensive experience of using or working with archives, for example a qualified archivist or a professional researcher. Experience of creating exhibitions and conducting oral history interviews is also essential. The person must possess excellent communication skills and presentation skills and be comfortable working in a marketing environment.

TIMEFRAME
•	Interested applicants should send copies of CVs and covering letters with relevant information to me, Jacqui Seargeant, at the address below. Please include proposed costs.
•	Please submit all details by 7th May 2013.
•	Interviews will be held soon after this date.
•	The project is urgent and therefore we would like the chosen applicant to commence the work as soon as possible.

Subject: Old newspaper on offer to a good home

Hello,

Does anyone want a copy of "The Bury and Norwich Post", 7th July 1830? The front page mainly concerns the arrangements for the funeral of the King (George IV).

The paper is a little damaged but in reasonable condition. Please respond off-list and I'll post the item to you, otherwise it will go in the shredder as it has nothing to do with surgery!

Thanks,

Kate.

Archivists Bringing Past Into Future Are Now Less Cloistered - NYTimes.com Archivists are the specialists who snatch objects from oblivion. They have long spent their careers cloistered, like the objects they protected. But now many of these professionals are stepping out. A main reason is the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York. The group, which recently surpassed 500 members, holds monthly events that draw a young, well-dressed crowd, hungry for chances to network, train and socialize. Members not only work at libraries, where archives have long resided, but also at such organizations as the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Junior League, the Episcopal Church, the Philharmonic, the Stock Exchange and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Colleagues

Parchment is predominantly made of the fibrous protein collagen, but contains small amounts of DNA, the genetic code, itself. In partnership with Sarah Fiddyment of York’s BioArCh group we've developed a new – non-invasive and non-destructive – method for sampling parchment collagen to recover from it evidence that is otherwise concealed from us.

Using mass-spectrometric analysis of the protein, collagen, we now have a method to identify the animal origin (down to the specific species of deer in one case) and state of deterioration of parchment.

We're currently working on a method that would allow us to non-destructively extract DNA samples from parchment. If we're successful then the DNA analysis will enable us to determine specific herds and the relationships between one animal and another. We believe, for example, that we shall be able to build up a database of herds contributing to the parchment record that would be the equivalent of dendrochronology for timber artefacts.

This opens up terrific new possibilities for research; we are (with colleagues elsewhere in the UK, Ireland and the USA) applying to the AHRC for funding to take this forward. In order to do this we need to obtain parchment samples across a wide range of geographical locations, document types and chronological range. The business of taking samples is easy, not time consuming and does no damage to the documents. Even archives without a conservation unit could take samples with minimal training. Sarah is prepared to visit archives to give demonstrations of the sampling method.

Because many of us have archives with clear provenance this project gives us a chance to create a fully referenced set of data from which it will be possible to extrapolate our findings. But we need help from archives throughout the UK. We’re particularly interested in hearing from diocesan archives with bishops’ and probate registers, and county, city and borough archives with parchment records created by the county/city/borough bureaucracy. We’re interested too in family and estate archives with similar well-provenanced characteristics, especially if we can show that there was more than one geographical centre of document production.

We already have assistance from Dundee, Flintshire, Norfolk and Norwich, Hull History Centre and from City of York Archives as well as the archiepiscopal holdings here at the Borthwick. If you’re interested, you can email me (as below), Professor Matthew Collins ([log in to unmask];, 01904 32 8806 or 01904 32 3905), the lead researcher on the project team, or Dr Sarah Fiddyment ([log in to unmask], 01904 32 8650 or
