Exceedingly minor detail. The Newcastle (upon Tyne) entry in the http://inamidst.com/topic/edwardboxes list says:
'Newcastle - photo. "Nearby at the western side of Portland Road with its junction with Sandyford road is a rarity. / This post box was erected in 1936, the year of the short and troubled reign of Edward VIII. It bears his Royal insignia." It's also mentioned elsewhere: "an Edward VIII post box in Sandyford - rare because of the shortness of his reign". "The post box, situated on the east side of Portland Road opposite Chester Crescent is five foot tall, red, with a black base and a splayed cap.", says Local List of Buildings [&c.].'
West side of Portland Road or east side? Answer: used to be west side. (Was it there from when it was installed? Don't know.) A few years ago it moved across the road to a position more or less facing where it had been. It's a short distance down from Sandyford Road. I think you can see it on Google maps, near a bus stop, and next to a car park.
Hope that helps (a little).
