PhD studentship in celebration of 40 years of Theatre Film and Television
Studies at Aberystwyth University:

³Wales, Culture and Commercial Television: the relationship between a new
technology and cultural life in Wales in the 1950s and 60s²
 
Aberystwyth Universityıs Alumni are supporting a PhD studentship through the
Annual Fund in celebration of the Departmentıs 40th anniversary in 2013 on
the topic of: Wales, Culture and Commercial Television: the relationship
between a new technology and cultural life in Wales in the 1950s and 60s
 
Television arrived in Wales as a new and exciting cultural force,
challenging older forms of relationships and offering new ways of
configuring cultural relations in society.
 
This doctoral research project (through the medium of English; under the
supervision of Professor Tom OıMalley and Dr Jamie Medhurst) will explore
Welsh television in the 1950s and 1960  by examining why  programmes  were
produced, the nature of the productions and the impact they had on Welsh
society. 
 
It will draw on the specialist skills of the Department in Welsh media
history, policy and the history of theatre and performance. The research
will draw on the holdings of a number of national media archives, in
particular those deposited at The National Library of Wales.
 
In your application please included a  statement of up to 1,000 words which
outlines [a] why you consider yourself suited to conduct research in this
area and [b] the particular area of research in Welsh television and society
in the 1950s and 60s that you would like to study, why, and what research
questions you would like to pursue.
 
This PhD is supported by Aberystwyth Universityıs Alumni through the Annual
Fund and is 
open to: UK/EU and non-EU applicants, at the rate of £15,000 per annum
(incl. fees; stipend, travel)
