Thank you Mark for the suggestions.

Good.

Right. There was still the odd conflict. I chose to keep theirs-full
(tf) for SAMP, but mine-full (mf) for TOPCAT documents at conflict
resolution. That way I hope not to have polluted the branch with recent
TOPCAT document changes.
The Hikianalia branch built without problems. Running SPLAT, TOPCAT,
and GAIA I was able interoperate tables and spectra. Behind the scenes
there were some errors. Those might be me sending an inappropriate table
(galaxy cluster data) to SPLAT.
It was stuff like:
Mar 12, 2013 4:43:04 PM uk.ac.starlink.splat.ast.ASTJ makeSpectral
INFO: Data units unknown: K (AST: Error at line 420 in file AstObject.c.
astGetSystem(FluxFrame): The current units (K) cannot be used with any
of the supported flux systems. (AST__BADUN))
Mar 12, 2013 5:13:47 PM uk.ac.starlink.splat.data.SpecData initialiseAst
INFO: http://127.0.0.1:2525/dynamic/5/t4.vot: coordinates are not
monotonic this means some operations will fail
uk.ac.starlink.splat.util.SplatException: Failed reading table column
I've only scraped the starjava tools surface, but it looks encouraging
to make a release candidate for the respective experts to evaluate.
