I'm more interested in the meaning that people ascribe to poverty. Were
my students in Tameside unusual in rejecting the label of poverty and
regarding it as insulting? Did the people Rowntree visited in York
think they were poor?
my African friends regard the money they get from the state, modest as
it is, as generous, because they think about how far it would go in
their home country. I'm not sure they would consider themselves poor.
They are more concerned at being labelled as refugees.
