We are consulting with researchers who would like digital access to paper (or other non-digital) social science qualitative data. We want researchers to nominate collections that might be candidates for digitising under the ESRC Digital Futures project. Please let us know if you know of any sources or would like to attend our consultation workshop.
Invite only workshop: Digital Futures Data Consultation Meeting
16 April 2013
National Centre for Voluntary Organisations, London
This data consultation meeting is being run as part of the ESRC Digital Futures Project. Digital Futures, part of the UK Data Service, aims to provide enhanced access to key ESRC-funded (or earlier) qualitative data collections via online data browsing and exploration. The project will exploit previously digitised and undigitised materials with both proven and known demand. The project is divided into two discrete strands of work. The first strand is largely technical and will develop a user-friendly system for publishing and exploring qualitative data online. The second strand is about enhancing existing data, currently in non-digital format, that will populate this system.
This meeting, part of the second strand, is to continue the consultation process regarding the selection of relevant collections for digitisation. Many of the studies that have been or will be nominated were created with ESRC funding, and include qualitative data from both cohort and classic UK policy-oriented studies. We are hoping to achieve wide representation across social science disciplines, including social policy, sociology, anthropology, education, geography, history, oral history, and more.
At this meeting, we intend that the group accomplish these objectives:
- Refine the criteria for selecting collections to digitise
- Compile a master list of candidate collections (a draft list will be circulated in advance)
- Prioritise the collections into definite, tentative and exclude categories.
We are seeking input from the community for suggestions for primary research data sources to be digitised. Please let us know if you would like to attend. For more information or suggestions please contact me.
Time: 12:45-16:00 (Lunch 12:45-13:15; Meeting to start at 13:15),
Venue: National Centre for Voluntary Organisations (near King’s Cross); Room TBC
