Transmedia, Hollywood 4: Spreading Change

This year’s Transmedia, Hollywood: Spreading Change conference will include panels on cause-based advertising; global media makers who are embracing transmedia tactics for social awareness; activists who hack culture to enact change; and millennial entrepreneurs who double as today’s philanthropists.  The Transmedia, Hollywood: Spreading Change conference offers participants a chance to engage in a critical dialogue at the intersection between shifting paradigm of storytelling, emerging technologies, and the blurring boundaries between entertainment and politics. Conference participants include Participant Media’s Social Action Film Campaigns Vice President Alden E. Stoner; Gap Inc’s Global Digital and Social Media Director Rachel Tipograph; East Los High producer Katie Elmore Mota; United Talent Agency’s Digital Media Agent Milana Rabkin; “Your Ad Here: The Cool Sell of Guerrilla Marketing” author Michael Serazio; National Film Board, Canada Filmmaker-in-Residence Katerina Cizek, among others. 

Professor Henry Jenkins writes about this year's topic: "Some ask why Transmedia Hollywood 2013 has so little to do with entertainment and so much to do with politics. We still are very excited about what’s happened with The Walking Dead, The Avengers, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Veronica Mars, and other franchises over the past year.  But we are also paying attention to the ways transmedia practices are transforming the world." Professor Denise Mann explains, "Because so many digital natives grew up embracing the power of spreadable ideas as a routine part of their daily lives, they have become adept at using these tools to engage in rapid fire critical thinking and problem solving. They have recognized the powerful sway they can hold by joining a community of like-minded friends, who in turn reach out to their circle of friends, thereby creating an almost instantaneous and exponentially potent means of effectuating change."
