The University

Stirling was the first new university to be established in Scotland for nearly 400 years, created by Royal Charter in 1967. Since its foundation, the University has embraced its role as an innovative, intellectual and cultural institution with an established reputation for blending arts and science.

Stirling is a University of distinction, home to leading researchers and scholars attracted by the unique learning environment, exceptional facilities and student-centred approach, where ability, not background, is recognised and valued.

The essence of the University of Stirling is its people: graduates, staff and students are helping to shape the world by making a direct and positive contribution to the development of prosperous, healthy and sustainable communities around the globe.
The University population has grown from 164 undergraduate students and 31 postgraduates in 1967 to 8,800 undergraduates and 3,500 postgraduates in 2012. With over 100 nationalities represented at Stirling, around one in five students come from overseas.

A truly Scottish university, Stirling’s reach extends to campuses in the Highland capital of Inverness and to Stornoway, gateway to the Western Isles.
Stirling’s main campus is located at the historic heart of Scotland, with convenient links to the rest of the UK and beyond. The University is within easy reach of Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, and its largest city, Glasgow. Scotland’s two main international airports are less than an hour away, with direct flights to Europe and beyond.

About Us

Within the School of Arts and Humanities, our students have the desire to explore, to innovate and to create. One of the largest Schools in the University, our subject areas are renowned for international and world leading research. Our work is well represented in national and international journals, at academic conferences around the world and in the media.

We offer students a broad range of subjects to study in an exciting, research led and highly interdisciplinary environment. Our teaching is regarded as innovative and the levels of student satisfaction are consistently high. A vibrant intellectual community is constantly enriched and renewed by the contribution of visiting scholars and practitioners.

The School encompasses four multidisciplinary divisions: Communications, Media & Culture; History and Politics; Literature and Languages; and the Stirling Law School and Philosophy.

Communications, Media and Culture (founded in 1978 as Film & Media Studies) is a major academic centre for the study of film, media and communications, and journalism. The Stirling Media Research Institute is at the centre of a strong research culture and the person to be appointed will contribute significantly to its research output. Generally, 20-30 PhD students research in CMC, and a regular stream of researchers and scholars visit from abroad. Film & Media at Stirling was awarded a grade 5 in the Research Assessment Exercises of 1992, 1996 and 2001. In 2008, 95% of its output was classed as of international standard and above, with 70% in the top two categories of ‘world-leading’ or of ‘international excellence’. Communications, Media and Culture is currently ranked top in Scotland and 12th in the UK for research in its field, enjoys high overall league table placings, has had top ten ratings for student satisfaction in Journalism, and was UK joint first in Media Studies in the National Student Survey (August 2011). CMC provides expertise externally in various areas of media and communications policy and practice, and is also the custodian, with the University Library, of important social and cultural archives. In addition to undergraduate programmes in Film and Media, and Journalism Studies, CMC offers a range of taught MSc and MLitt programmes including Media Management, Strategic Public Relations and Communication Management, Media and Culture, Film Studies, and Media and Communications Management (Vietnam). Masters programmes are also delivered overseas as well as online.

Research spans a wide range across communications, media and cultural themes and is conducted in collaboration with researchers in universities in the UK and overseas. CMC has very strong international links with other universities and is (for example) currently delivering MSc programmes in both Ho Chi Minh City and Danang in Vietnam, with imminent expansion in Hanoi. Our MSc Strategic Public Relations (double degree with Lund University) was launched in September 2012, and our MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations (joint degree with Pomepu Fabra University) starts in September 2013 alongside further active developments in international taught postgraduate delivery.

The Post

CMC has a full complement of around 20 academic staff posts, along with honorary and emeritus posts, and administrative and secretarial support staff. In addition to its postgraduate programmes it offers undergraduate programmes to Honours level in Journalism Studies and in Film & Media. CMC’s degrees are popular choices for students from Scotland, the UK and abroad, as are its Combined Honours degrees offered with other disciplines, now facilitated by expanding collaboration within the recently formed School of Arts and Humanities. CMC prides itself on providing students with a mixture of practical and analytical work in a wide range of media, allowing them to gain production experience with an emphasis variously on digital, audio, video or print.

CMC wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate at Lecturer level to pursue research in Public Relations as a member of the Stirling Media Research Institute, to teach and supervise postgraduate and undergraduate students, and to undertake administrative duties as appropriate. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in both CMC’s and the School of Arts and Humanities’ expanding portfolio of Masters programmes by developing specialist provision where appropriate, and to supervise doctoral students. Applications will be welcome from those who have research specialisms in a range of areas in Public Relations.

The appointment, intended chiefly to further strengthen CMC’s research capability, will be made on the basis of the successful candidate’s academic achievement and future plans and potential. The likely contribution by candidates to the research performance of the Division and the School, including future REF assessments, will be of particular importance.

Established record of international-quality researchtargeted to the regular production of high quality outputs leading to REF inclusion.

The Post

The post is a full-time, open ended position which should commence no later than 1 August 2013; or earlier if possible.
