Hi Marion
The LRC and Library staff have a pivotal role in providing resource guidance for independent informal and formal learning and in most colleges, the VLE is the core of this activity. Too many organisations fragment the support, leaving library staff limited or no access to learning technology . This model undermines the cross college use of materials and resources and is at best inefficient and at worse, ineffectual. All professional services staff who have a role in teaching and learning require access to course content in order to align resources to reading lists and assignment briefs. Ideally, the access should be automatic, with read and write permissions. The issue that tends to be used against such access is one of control of users and their activity by some academic staff. The norm then becomes risk aversive and in order to control a non existent threat, everyone bar students, gets locked out. On the positive side, there are many areas of good practice and I know colleagues will write in with these. South Essex College is currently undergoing a major strategic review of their VLE provision and within the next few months, will be operating on the new model of all Learning Services staff having access to and interaction with VLE content and the academic staff who create it.
Kind regards

Hi
Does your institition have roles set up at VLE admin level for Library staff e.g. to have read access to all courses or the ability to self-enrol/un-enrol for read, guest or instructor access - to be able to help students (particularly distance learning students) and staff with enquiries about Vision courses e.g. with queries about library content/links in courses?
Any information or advice you have about roles for library staff in the VLE would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks
Kind regards
