Online Content Delivery Workshop: the good, the bad and the ugly
At this year’s UKSG Annual Conference JISC Collections will be co-hosting a session, with Eduserv, on usability. It will focus on the different user journeys and the challenges these present both for publishers as well as end users.
Join us at UKSG on Monday 8 April 17:30 at the Tregonwell Seminar Suite 2, Bournemouth International Centre.
If you’re a publisher, how much do you value your users? If you’re a librarian, do you have a favourite publisher – one that your patrons find easy to use? What about mobile access, is this as easy as it’s supposed to be in the twenty-first century?
Ease of use is the mantra of the day. Publishers want to ensure subscribers renew. In fact, publishers want to earn more money from their customers and improving usability could be the key. If users are pushed into finding other ways to get information (don’t you just love Google? ) then publishers will lose out.
As librarians you want to simplify the life of your patrons and provide a one-step guide to accessing resources and fewer library inductions about how to use all the different resources.
Mobile access has radically changed the way we live and work, not least for students. You can now stand in the rain waiting for a bus and access information from your smart phone or tablet device. But how easy is it in reality?
While mobile developments are relatively new the same old problem exists – some publishers are just not in tune with their users. Their websites make the task of accessing content less than straightforward and difficult for users to navigate. Conflicting demands from within their businesses impacts the design, layout, branding, look, feel and ultimately ease of use.
Some publishers have responded to the increased use in mobile devices and developed excellent user interfaces – either as a mobile app, or through device responsive websites. Both work equally as well, and users have embraced them. But is it saving time?
Co-presented by UK Federation Manager Mark Williams and Tom Edmonds, Product Manager for OpenAthens, this workshop will explore the good, the bad and the ugly of online content delivery.
