Dear all,
Can I encourage you to consider whether you might wish to apply for funding under the Cultural Value project within the AHRC. It is considering the wider value of arts and culture in the UK. This has the potential to set policy within the UK with regards to all sorts of things. I imagine there will be lots of applications exploring the cultural value of Opera, orchestral music, learning a classical music instrument etc. It would be good if those of you with experience or interests in either qualitative or quantitative study of popular music audiences would apply. They are going to fund 20 – 40 projects mostly of £20,000 - £40,000. They are interested in a range of approaches, from commentaries on existing research through to collecting and mining data. An open attitude seems to be being taken to what sort of study is conceived. But I could see very successful potential studies on the value of EDMC to the chemical generation of 1988-2000 in the UK; the cultural value of extreme metal to marginalised individuals; the cultural value of chart pop in providing an independent space to young people; the wider value in building relationships of making popular music to band members; the role of hip hop in building communities beyond the mainstream; an assessment of the total financial contribution of popular music to the UK, inside and outside the music industry.
I'm sure you could all think up some excellent proposals for studies that would be excellent. Perhaps you are all thinking of applying anyway, and are way ahead of me, but there is till mid April to create an application I believe.
Anyway details here.
