Dear All,
further to Monday's email soliciting comments for the
RAS' response to the House of Commons S&T Committee's
enquiry into UK and European space agencies, here
is the RAS public affairs officer's call for comments,
which usefully includes a link to the S&T Committee's
webpage describing the enquiry.
If you have any comments, please do send them to me
or directly to the RAS (Robert Massey, [log in to unmask])
by 5th April. In particular, it would be useful for
us to know which satellites/space services are essential
to the geophysics community's research even if we
are not active as instigators/designers of these
space missions (GPS, obviously, but which others?
In particular, the ones operated by ESA.).
Thank you to those who have already sent me comments.
Regards,
Sheila Peacock
(RAS Council)

Dear Colleagues
As you may know, the Commons Science and Technology Committee is currently engaged in an inquiry into
the European and UK Space Agencies.
You can see the full details at
http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/science-and-technology-committee/inquiries/parliament-2010/european-and-uk-space-agencies/
Areas for investigation include the overlapping relationship between the EU and ESA,
whether UK membership of ESA is good value, whether the UK Space Agency is effective
and the risks from space debris and space weather.
The RAS will almost certainly put in a response and I’d very much like this to be
informed by our wider Fellowship and the astronomy and geophysics communities more generally.
If you or your colleagues have any points you’d like to see us make,
would you mind passing them on to me? Given the submission deadline it would be helpful
if these could come back to me by 5 April.
Many thanks and best wishes
Robert
