Submission Deadline for this workshop: April 12th, 2013
AIM AND SCOPE
We invite submissions to the second workshop on Understanding Problems
(GECCO-UP).
Optimisation algorithms have been extensively studied in the recent
years, but until recently less attention has been paid to the
understanding of the problems being solved. The 2nd GECCO-UP will
continue the themes of last year's workshop and aims to provide a
forum for the discussion and exploration of methods for the analysis,
creation and synthesis of optimisation problems through both
theoretical and experimental methods. In addition to paper
presentations, the workshop will call for demonstrations of software
and frameworks relevant to problem understanding. Furthermore, to
facilitate discussion of new ideas and approaches, a section of the
workshop will be dedicated to presentations exploring and analysing a
shared optimisation problem data set which will be provided by the
organisers with the call for participation.
The following key areas of active research will be of specific
interest (although submissions are not limited to these areas):
* creation of test problems;
* experimental methods for analysing and detecting problem landscapes;
* identifiers and metrics for describing problem features;
* spatial descriptors;
* problem space visualisation;
* difficulty and complexity analysis;
* analysis of dynamic problems;
* analysis of noisy problems;
* construction of problem taxonomies and theoretical foundations.
The workshop will be split into 3 parts: paper presentations; live
demos; and data exploration.
The live demo section will be dedicated to demonstrating new software,
tools and frameworks which are relevant to the topic of problem
understanding.
A section of the workshop will be dedicated to papers analysing and
visualising a set of supplied data, which will provide a means of
comparisons based on the same data as well as offer the opportunity
for identifying and discussing new areas of potential in problem
understanding. Participants are encouraged to give live demonstrations
if they submit visualisations of the results.

to http://www.sigevo.org/gecco-2013/ for further details. Manuscripts
should not exceed 8 pages. Papers should be submitted by 12th April
2013 in PDF format to [log in to unmask] Acceptance to the
workshop will be based on peer review of submitted papers.
PROGRAMME COMMITTEE / REVIEWERS
If you are interested in participating the 2nd GECCO-UP workshop or
intent to attend the workshop please also consider signing up to
review for this workshop. This is the second workshop and we expect a
good number of submissions as well as establishing a large programme
committee to spread the load. To register as a reviewer for this
workshop or to request more information please contact the organisers
