Nick would be better placed to respond here, but I wanted to point out
a few things.
1. Nick's code has been accepted upstream by the maintainers of
Tesseract, so the next release of the software will support ancient
Greek out of the box, without needing a separate installation step for
the polytonic Greek support.
2. Tesseract on its own may not be the most user-friendly application,
but there are a number of front-ends for it which should eventually
mitigate that problem.
3. Tesseract is open source, and this means that Nick's work can be
built upon by others in a way that would be difficult or impossible
when one starts with commercial software. I think that it is a
mistake to make user-friendliness the first goal. With free and open
foundations, better user experience(s) can be added later.
Best wishes,
Peter
