Dear Colleagues
This is to remind you of the fifth and final Translation in History
event at University College London in the Christopher Ingold Building
(http://www.ucl.ac.uk/find-us/?locationID=98):
Thursday 21 March, 6-7.30 pm: Dr. Alison Martin (Reading): "A
Cosmopolitan Centre for Mankind": Translation in the German Romantic
Tradition
Friedrich Schleiermacher?s seminal lecture ?On the Different Methods
of Translating? (1813) defined translation in terms of a binary
opposition between foreignisation and domestication which echoed
through many discussions of translation theory and practice in early
nineteenth-century Germany. This lecture contextualizes
Schleiermacher?s essay by considering its relationship to language
politics in this period and by reflecting on its relevance for
Romantic debates about translation and power, identity and nation.
This lecture series is supported by the Faculty Institute of Graduate Studies.
