We look forward to welcoming you to the 15th LUCAS AGM, annual lecture, and reception on Thursday 18 April 2013 when Dr Chris Woolgar, Professor of History and Archival Studies, University of Southampton will speak on
CLIO AND THE CURATORS: CURIOSITY, THE CULTURAL HERITAGE AND THE POWER OF INFORMATION
History is a discipline based on curiosity, but that inspiration may become unrealisable unless significant challenges are addressed. Increasingly new researchers lack the knowledge and skills to take their studies beyond the confines of a limited range of topics and chronology. The disciplines of palaeography and diplomatic, an understanding of context and the ways in which documents work, a knowledge of the languages used in documents — all traditional, but essential curatorial skills — are crucial for new generations of researchers. At the same time, the political environment in which archivists work frequently does not place a premium on this expertise. Yet the cultural heritage requires a broad intellectual base among both historians and curators if it is to preserved effectively and if its importance is to be communicated widely.
