Dear Evie,
For historical work, Ann Taylor has done a good deal of research over the years. Mainly on older varieties of English, but I remember a paper of hers on Greek as well. Some of this builds on Tony Kroch's work in the 1989 (?) LVC paper that considered variation as a component of word order change in French and English.
Aria Adli has done some excellent work on word order and variation across a number of languages – he's got reference son his web page, and I'm sure he will have comprehensive references to other work in this vein.
best, mm
