Friday 8 March 6 - 7:30pm Lecture Recital Room, Guildhall School
Jesus in the Everywhere!
In a lecture-recital with the Guildhall Percussion Ensemble, Richard Benjafield, Head of Wind Brass and Percussion at the School explores whether studying and performing experimental percussion music makes the musician, in light of his research project undertaken at the School.
This session will look at the percussion music of composers including John Cage and Steve Reich, as well as lesser-known figures, and look at how their inventions and innovative work give choices to percussionists, enabling then to develop their musicianship as they learn. Questions that have arisen in research include “Does not knowing how to write for percussion give the composer an advantage?” and “What amount of percussion instruments is too many?” The talk will be illustrated by videos of Guildhall Percussion Ensemble in performance.
