Health & Illness are more than medical matters; illness is a human experience, in which biological processes are shaped by social, political and economic conditions, by cultural beliefs and values, and by systems of language and meaning. The Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine is unique interdisciplinary social science department working in collaboration with biomedical researchers and clinicians. We focus on the social, political, economic, legal and ethical factors shaping developments in biomedicine, disease and healthcare and their implications. It is also home to the Institute of Gerontology, a leading multi-disciplinary centre for research and teaching into the study of ageing.
We welcome applications from highly motivated students in the following areas
• Global health inequalities;
• Mental health, psychiatry and neuroscience;
• Biomedicine, bioscience and society;
• Developments in health and medical technologies, social science and aging;
• Health policy and health economics;
• Bioeconomies and commercial and economic factors in medical developments and health care;
• The problems of translational research;
• The definition and measurement of health and social outcomes by governments, insurers, professionals and patients.
Research in the Department is organised into a number of research groups of faculty, research fellows, research students and visitors. Each research group has a set of strategic aims and a forward-looking plan of activities and outputs, including grant development, publications, peer review, public engagement and policy-related work. As part of their contribution to the SSHM research community, research groups also organise seminars, conferences, exhibits, workshops and other communal activities. Collaborative work across SSHM research groups and with groups across King's is encouraged and supported.
SSHM Research Groups are organised as follows:
• Ageing & Society
• Biomedicine, Ethics & Social Justice
• Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals & Public Policy
• Culture, Medicine & Power
