The Department of Political Science and Sociology at the European University
in Saint-Petersburg opens a position of Associate Professor/Professor in
Urban Studies and Urban Planning.
The Professor of Urban Studies and Urban Planning would teach courses,
conduct sociological research, and give counsel on issues related to the
social aspects of the modern city.
Urban Studies is an interdisciplinary field, so some competence in
anthropology and architecture is required. Expertise in the theories of
public sphere, civil society, and/or international political economy, is a
plus. Knowledge of or at least interest in the city of Saint-Petersburg is
necessary for a successful application. The Professor is expected to teach
courses on Urban Studies and some other subfields of sociology and possibly
anthropology. He or she is also expected to build a research collective from
the faculty and graduate students of the University, with a potentiality of
growing into a full scale interdisciplinary research center. Therefore,
persons with some organizational experience will be given priority. When
elected, the Professor is expected to be involved in the expertise of the
urban development policies in Saint-Petersburg.
Salary is negotiable, and ranges from 55000 to 80000 $, in accordance with
the Russian Labor Code.
EUSP would especially prioritize applications from candidates combining
scholarly excellence with contributions to wider public discussions, regular
media appearances, etc.
The candidate should provide his/her CV, a short letter of application,
copies of recent work, and name 3 referees familiar with his/her work.

The Department of Political Science and Sociology at the European University

Professor/Associate Professor of Wealth and Social Power.
The UBS Professor of Wealth and Social Power would be teaching courses,
conducting research, and giving counsel on various subjects dealing with the
studies of social stratification with special focus on elite groups,
including economic, cultural, and political elites. Ability to develop
interdisciplinary approaches to the issues of wealth distribution and
different forms of power combining insights from economic sociology,
political economy, organizations theory, and political science would be a
crucial advantage. A particular emphasis should be put on research methods,
which should include quantitative methods. Expertise in data gathering
(designing and testing survey questionnaires, developing coding protocols
for participant observation or archival research, etc.) and contemporary
data processing techniques will be an important competitive advantage.
Familiarity with major publicly accessible statistical databases, including
information pertaining to Russia (RossStat, Eurostat, RLMS) is a
requirement.
The Professor should be able to teach M.A. and Ph.D. level courses in social
stratification and quantitative methods, among others.
The principal role of the Professor would be to produce world-class research
on emerging patterns of stratification, dominance, and leadership in the
Russian society, on the sociological profile of the new wealthy groups, and
to contribute to public discussions on the subject. He or she should also be
able to provide students with practical guidance in gathering data necessary
to produce world-class research on the subjects specified above.
