An excellent opportunity has arisen for a superb science communicator to join the SfAM team, providing accurate and timely communications on applied microbiology and the innovative work of the Society.
Overview and terms
Job title: Communications Manager - maternity cover.
Purpose: To be responsible for the development and execution of SfAM's communication strategy and the management of the Communications Officer.
Responsible to: CEO.
Responsible for: Communications Officer and any volunteers/interns/placement students.
Working with: Colleagues within the SfAM office, external suppliers, trustees, Editors of the Society journals, authors and external contacts.
Location: Bedford Heights, Brickhill Drive, Bedford, MK41 7PH - with the opportunity for some home working.
Post: Fixed term contract for up to 12 months - with the possibility for continuation for at least a further six months.
Salary: £43-£48K pa - depending upon qualifications and experience.

The main duty of the Communications Manager (CM) is to lead on the development and implementation of SfAM's communications strategy through online communications (including the website), media work, publications (in particular Microbiologist), policy work, public engagement and other external affairs activities.
The CM will manage the SfAM website and all online communications, ensuring consistency of tone and accuracy of content. It is the duty of the CM to oversee all publicity associated with the Society through traditional and social media and to ensure all appropriate parties, both internal and external, are involved in this aspect of work. The CM is also the Chief Editor of the quarterly magazine Microbiologist and must ensure it is delivered to members with consistently good quality. This involves implementation and delivery in accordance with the production schedule. The CM will ensure all relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations' inquiries are responded to with the help of the right experts, in a professional and timely manner. It is the duty of the CM to ensure that SfAM participates in all public engagement activities stipulated in the public engagement plan, appropriately and within the public engagement budget. As well as ensuring the maintenance of current contacts through various public affairs and networking activities, the CM will ensure all communications activity is carried out within the communications budget as set by the CEO and Trustees.

Essential
We are seeking an enthusiastic communicator with at least five years’ experience in a communications role. You will have:
• A proven track record of top class written and oral communications.
• A professional, can-do attitude and acknowledgement of the need to occasionally work out-of-hours in order to achieve a goal.
• A natural ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, trustees, external suppliers and professional contacts at all levels, from suppliers to world leaders in the field of microbiology.
• An understanding of the importance of tone and consistency in all communications and the nuances which mean these vary depending upon the method of communication.
• A friendly and personable manner showing relevant knowledge and confidence without arrogance.
• A thoughtful approach and appreciation for the need to set context in all communications.
Desirable
You may have:
• At least two years’ experience managing people in a similar role.
• An established contact list of science, environment, and health journalists in national and international press.
• Contacts within the Learned Society sector.
• A higher educational qualification in biological sciences, preferably microbiology.
• Membership of relevant professional organizations.
