NERC funded PhD studentship in Atmospheric Chemistry
Applications are invited for a NERC funded tied PhD studentship to work in the School of Chemistry at Leeds on a project jointly supervised by Prof. Dwayne Heard and Dr. Mark Blitz.
Recent field measurements in tropical forests have revealed much higher concentrations of the hydroxyl (OH) radical than can explained by current atmospheric models. The aim of this project is to investigate the photolysis of peroxy radicals as a potential source of the missing OH. The PhD student will construct and commission a new apparatus to measure quantitative absorption spectra of a range of peroxy radicals. The PhD student will also identify some of the products generated following peroxy radical photolysis using laser-based methods and end-product analysis.
The proposed start date is 1 September 2013, and the funding will support 3 years of PhD study. Standard NERC eligibility rules apply. Applicants should have or expect to receive a 2.1 degree or higher in Chemistry or a related discipline (or have a 2:2 degree but also a masters qualification) and be a UK citizen. The studentship will cover the successful applicant’s fees and provides the standard NERC PhD stipend.
Initial expressions of interest, with an accompanying CV, should be addressed to Dwayne Heard ([log in to unmask]) or Mark Blitz ([log in to unmask])
